What happens if your Japan Digital Nomad visa is rejected?
Last checked: 2026-11-06
The office will not tell you the specific reason, and it generally will not accept a new application for the same purpose within six months. These are general Foreign Ministry visa rules, not rules written for this visa. We found no rejection figures or an official list of reasons for this visa, so ask your office how it treats your case.
The official rules after a rejection
| Question | Foreign Ministry answer |
|---|---|
| Will they say why? | No. They say the application did not meet the criteria, and do not give the specific reason. |
| Why not? | They say the details could be used to get around the examination. They also cite the Administrative Procedure Act, Article 3, Paragraph 1, Item 10. |
| Can I reapply at once? | No. A new application for the same purpose is not accepted within six months of the rejection. |
| Any exception? | Sometimes, where your circumstances have changed significantly and travel to Japan is necessary for humanitarian reasons. Ask the embassy or consulate first. |
| Do I pay the fee? | No. No visa fee is charged if a visa is not issued. An approved agency may charge its own fee. |
Chicago and Denver repeat that they will not give the reason. The UK embassy says the same in its FAQ.
"Not accepted" is different from "rejected"
An office may decline to take your application at all. The Foreign Ministry lists these cases:
- You hold Japanese nationality.
- You apply outside your country of birth or residence.
- You already hold a valid visa or re-entry permit.
- You reapply for the same purpose within six months of a rejection.
- Your application is already being processed at another office.
- Your documents have errors or omissions.
- Your passport lacks validity or visa space.
- Your proxy is not qualified to apply for you.
- A Certificate of Eligibility application is still pending.
Chicago says it notifies you of errors so you can fix them and apply again. If your problem is an error, ask whether it counts as a rejection. See where to apply for the rule on your country of residence.
Two six-month rules that are easy to mix up
| Rule | When it starts | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Wait after a rejection | From the rejection of a visa application | Foreign Ministry FAQ, general visa rule |

What to check against the official tests
No official source lists why this visa gets refused. Lists on unofficial sites are guesses, and this table is not a list of reasons. It only matches each official test with a point you can check yourself.
| Official test | What to check |
|---|---|
| Nationality | Your passport is on the official chart. |
| Income | Your proof shows 10 million yen a year. Sole proprietors use profit after expenses, not contract value. |
| Work | Your work is one of the two listed activities, with no job or contract in Japan. See the requirements. |
| Insurance | The policy covers death, injury and illness for your whole stay, with 10 million yen or more for treatment. See the insurance rule. |
| Stay | Your dates fit within six months. Your activity plan matches them. |
What we could not confirm
- Appeals: we found no appeal process for a visa refusal in these sources.
- Stating a past refusal: we did not review how an earlier rejection affects a later application.
- A different purpose: the six-month rule speaks of the same purpose. We found nothing on what counts as the same purpose. Ask before you apply for a different visa.
- Other offices: the rule may differ in practice. Ask the office that handled your application.
The Foreign Ministry also says that neither a Certificate of Eligibility nor a visa guarantees entry. Other routes are compared in Digital Nomad vs Long Stay.
