Japan Digital Nomad visa for Canadians: offices, fee and income
Last checked: 2026-11-06
Canada is on the official chart, and Canadian citizens pay no visa fee, says the Toronto consulate. You apply through the office that covers your province. Toronto links to the Foreign Ministry page for this visa, and we found no separate Canadian checklist, so ask your office what it wants. The chart has no date, so check it too.
What is the same for everyone
The core tests do not change: 10 million yen income, private medical insurance, and six months with no extension. The documents list comes from the Foreign Ministry page.
Which office covers you?
The Toronto consulate gives this list. It says visa matters are handled locally by each office.
| Office | Who it covers |
|---|---|
| Embassy in Ottawa | Ottawa residents |
| Toronto | Ontario residents, except the Ottawa area |
| Vancouver | British Columbia and Yukon residents |
| Calgary | Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Northwest Territories and Nunavut residents |
| Montreal | Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Labrador and Newfoundland residents |
We read Toronto's visa page and one Vancouver visa page. We did not check Ottawa, Calgary or Montreal.
What Toronto says
| Item | Toronto's page |
|---|---|
| Who can apply | Residents of its area with valid long-term status in Canada. Visitors must apply in their own country. |
| Appointments | Required for purposes other than eVISA tourism. Requests go by email, and online booking is suspended. Its email list of purposes does not name this visa, so ask how to book. |
| In person | All applicants come in person, except minor children. |
| Processing | Up to 10 business days, and some cases take longer. This is general guidance. See the timeline. |
| Fee | Canadian citizens are exempt. Others pay 140 Canadian dollars single entry, or 280 for double or multiple entry. |
| Passport | Japan does not officially require six months of validity. It strongly recommends a passport valid for your whole visit. |
If you live in Canada but are not a citizen, you still need a nationality on the official chart. See where to apply.
Income in Canadian dollars
At the October 30, 2026 rates, 10 million yen is about 88,633 Canadian dollars, by our arithmetic. That uses 157.47 yen per US dollar and 1.3957 Canadian dollars per US dollar from the Federal Reserve. We found no official rate. Rates move, so check with the income calculator.
Other routes for Canadians
- Visitor stay: Canadian passport holders do not need a visa for up to 90 days of tourism or short-term business, not including paid activities. Canada is not among the countries with a six-month arrangement. See six months without a visa.
- Working holiday: Canada is a partner, with 6,283 places a year and two stays possible. See the comparison.
Tax
This is not tax advice. An archived Canadian text of the convention, marked as having no official sanction, uses a test of 183 days in the calendar year. The US and UK conventions look at any 12-month period instead, so the count can differ. See the tax page. We did not review Canadian tax rules, so ask a tax adviser about your residency at home.
A checklist for Canadian applicants
- Find the office for your address, and read its current visa page.
- Ask how to book, because this visa is not on Toronto's email list.
- Ask for its document list and how long this visa takes.
- Confirm that the fee exemption applies to this visa.
