Japan Digital Nomad visa for UK citizens: fee, office and income
Last checked: 2026-11-06
The United Kingdom is on the official chart, but British citizens are not on the UK embassy's free-of-charge list, so expect the general fee of 77 pounds for a single entry. The embassy does not state a fee for this visa type, so confirm the amount. You apply in London, or in Edinburgh if you live in its area. The chart has no date, so check it too.
What is the same for everyone
The core tests do not change: 10 million yen income, private medical insurance, and six months with no extension. The UK embassy links to the Foreign Ministry page for this visa, and Edinburgh lists this visa type. We found no separate UK checklist. See the documents list.
London or Edinburgh?
| Office | Who it covers | How to apply |
|---|---|---|
| Embassy in London | UK residents outside the Edinburgh area | In person, with an appointment booked in advance |
| Consulate-General in Edinburgh | Scotland and these north of England areas: County Durham, Cumberland, Darlington, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, Northumberland, Redcar and Cleveland, South Tyneside, Stockton-on-Tees, Sunderland, Westmorland and Furness | In person, with an appointment booked online |
The London page says Cumbria where the Edinburgh page says Cumberland and Westmorland and Furness. If you live near the border, ask. Visitors to the UK cannot apply at either office. See where to apply.
Fee and paperwork
| Item | What the page says |
|---|---|
| Single entry | 77 pounds |
| Multiple entry | 154 pounds |
| Payment | Edinburgh takes cash only, no card or cheque |
| Passport pages | At least one and a half unused visa pages, says the embassy FAQ |
| Processing | In most cases 5 working days, at both offices. This is general guidance. See the timeline for this visa. |
| Validity | A single-entry visa is valid for three months |
Which British passport?
The embassy says British Overseas Citizens, British Subjects, British Overseas Territories Citizens and holders of British Overseas Territories passports are not counted as "British Citizens" for visa exemption. The chart for this visa says "United Kingdom", and asks for nationals or citizens. If you hold one of those passports, ask the embassy before you apply.
Income in pounds
At the October 30, 2026 rates, 10 million yen is about 47,398 pounds, by our arithmetic. That uses 157.47 yen per US dollar and 1.3398 dollars per pound from the Federal Reserve. We found no official rate. Rates move, so check with the income calculator.
Other routes for British citizens
- Visitor stay: British citizens can stay as temporary visitors for up to six months with an extension. That is not a remote work status. See six months without a visa.
- Working holiday: the UK is a partner, with 6,000 places a year and two stays possible. See the comparison.
Tax
This is not tax advice. Article 14 of the UK convention uses a test of 183 days in any 12-month period. It is compared on the tax page. We did not review UK tax rules, so ask a tax adviser how a six-month stay affects you at home.
A checklist for UK applicants
- Confirm your passport type and that the UK is still on the chart.
- Ask which office covers your address.
- Ask the fee for this visa, and how to pay.
- Check you have one and a half free visa pages.
- Ask how long this visa takes at that office.
